Acupuncture for Anxiety
What is anxiety holding you back from?
Is your mind filled with worries about health, natural disasters, money, accidents, and any negative thing your mind can grab hold of? Are you dreading certain social situations (or certain people) and analyzing how you behaved after each social gathering you go to? Are you avoiding participating fully at work or in school because of your anxiety? Are you snapping at your loved ones because you feel so stressed and negative all the time? Are you experiencing the awful feeling of panic attacks and dreading your next one?
Anxiety can impact your life in so many ways.
If you feel like you’re doing everything you can to keep your anxiety under control, but it’s still impacting you, it may be time to add another tool to your toolbox - acupuncture.
Acupuncture has been shown in studies to improve anxiety symptoms. Scientists theorize that it does this by promoting healthy nervous system functions that lead to more feelings of calm and less anxiety. These benefits persist beyond the acupuncture session. Acupuncture can be a useful and gentle tool combined with other approaches to managing anxiety such as medication, natural remedies, and therapy.
How Does It Work?
As a registered naturopathic doctor, I perform acupuncture on my patients on a regular basis. Mental health is one of the main areas of focus in my practice.
Patients come in once a week for 4-8 weeks. After this, the frequency of sessions is reduced based on the patient’s progress (for example, once a month or less frequently). The great thing about acupuncture is that points can be added for other conditions in addition to anxiety such as migraines, IBS, arthritis, acne, and more. I often will combine acupuncture with other recommendations like herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, diet and lifestyle changes for a holistic approach to managing anxiety and overall health.
